Dear Little Mitchell came to us from Cassie, another VicDRG foster carer, and so began the story of a deeply felt, lifelong love. Initially we imagined we would be Mitchell's carers until he found a permanent home. We were in a good position to be foster Guardians and to give the little man the care and tenderness and routine that he needed, but weren't quite able to commit to adopting a dog of our own, permanently.
After a few weeks with us, the initially shy, reticent Mitchell emerged from his shell. From a slightly quiet, relatively autonomous creature who preferred to stay close to his bed, he became more and more oriented to his human cohabitants, excited to bound around with other local dogs, and the most loyal and attentive companion. We came to understand his quirks and eccentricities, his dislike for leather boots and being brushed, and he showed us how extremely smart he could be when it suited him, learning to lie down and roll over, as well as all the rudimental basics of walking, fetching and behaving. Like the best terriers, he knows how to assert his presence and his desires, and he has a cheeky side. Mitchell likes to push the envelope if it means more attention, more cuddles or more to eat, and watching that side of him emerge in the early days was so rewarding, as was see in him adjust to social and domestic life. Mitchell's terrier smarts means that he responds quickly and understands who the boss is, and he very quickly became a loyal and obedient young man. One of his many endearing qualities is his endless appreciation for cuddles. Mitchell is like a rag doll in your arms, and will lie in your lap for hours if you'll let him. He loves getting up close and personal, especially if it involves a couch or a bed. Out in the streets and parks of Melbourne and Canberra between which Mitchell now divides his time he can sprint by your side as long as you can run. He has a sturdy little body and as much stamina as we have for long runs and exercise sessions, particularly if they involve some rolling around in the grass.
From a cautious, shy little man, Mitchell has become a worldy and vivacious little character - mobile, flexible, friendly and happy-go-lucky. Everyone falls in love with him. After a few months with this special bundle of fur, we had no choice but to do whatever it took to adopt him, and keep him with us for life.
Mitchell is loved so hard and so deeply by his three dads, and by a roster of others who have lived with him since he arrived, including Boots, Sookie, Talula and Harry (other dogs pals who always fall in love with), his Aunties Kay and Husband, his grandmother Judi and many other beloved relatives.
It's so hard to believe this brilliant little man was ever mistreated or abandoned. He has brought so much endless joy to all of our lives.
